Bed and Mattress Size Guide
Choosing the right bed and mattress size isn’t always easy – especially when you’re trying to balance comfort and style with the dimensions of your bedroom.
Whether you’re furnishing your first home, adding to your teenager’s room, or upgrading your master bedroom, this guide explains the standard UK beds and mattress sizes, as well as how to measure your space for the perfect fit.
Let’s jump right in!
UK bed and mattress sizes
When it comes to the standard bed and mattress sizes in the UK, you’ll need to look at the width and length to see the difference.
Beds like the single, small double, and double are the same in length – only the width changes. King and super king beds, however, are both wider and longer, which makes them a go-to for taller sleepers and anyone who loves to starfish in their sleep.
Check out our easy-to-understand table below to see standard UK bed and mattress sizes:
| Mattress Size | Inches | Centimetres |
|---|---|---|
| Single Mattress Dimensions | 3ft x 6ft 3 | 90cm x 190cm |
| Small Double Mattress Dimensions | 4ft x 6ft 3” | 120cm x 190cm |
| Double Mattress Dimensions | 4ft 6” x 6ft 3” | 135cm x 190cm |
| King Size Mattress Dimensions | 5ft x 6ft 6” | 150cm x 200cm |
| Super King Mattress Dimensions | 6ft x 6ft 6” | 180cm x 200cm |
What bed size do I need?
Before you dive into checking your dream bed dimensions, you’ll need to figure out the space you’ll need to sprawl out on, as well as the floor space in the room you’re working with.
Don’t forget to factor in space to enjoy your bedroom, too. For example, a small studio apartment would be best suited with a small double or double sized bed, as opposed to a large king sized bed that leaves no room for wardrobes and drawers.
Certain style and function options might also impact the overall square footage of your bedroom. An ottoman bed could have slightly bigger dimensions than standard, but it provides clever storage options, removing the need for an extra set of drawers in your room, and saving space overall. Your perfect bed might even feature an impressive, looming headboard, which takes up plenty of room upwards but not so much out to the sides.

Kids beds
Designed for growing bodies and smaller sleepers, kids’ beds are slightly more compact than a standard single. In our collection, you can find bunk beds, high sleepers, and even triple sleepers that are perfect for a shared bedroom between siblings or Saturday night sleepovers. Find out more over on our kids bed buying guide.
Best for: Children and younger teens
Single beds
Single beds are compact but versatile. The smaller dimensions are perfect for teens, solo sleepers, and children ready to graduate from a kids’ bed. Their space-saving size also makes them a great fit for smaller spaces, like box rooms, guest rooms and compact studio flats.
Best for: Children, small bedrooms, and teenagers
Small double beds
The best of both worlds, small double beds are – as the name suggests – a little smaller than double beds, and a little larger than single beds. This makes them the ideal choice for teenagers yearning for space to sprawl, or even as a first bed for someone just leaving home, such as university students. They’re also great for guest rooms that often host single sleepers.
Best for: Teenagers, students, and guest rooms
Double beds
The most popular UK bed size, double beds are the go-to choice for couples and solo sleepers who like a bit of extra room. They also fit into pretty much any bedroom floor plan – just make sure you measure the dimensions first!
Best for: Couples and sprawling solo sleepers
King size beds
More spacious than a double, king size beds offer extra width and length – making them a great choice for taller sleepers or couples who’d just like a bit more elbow room. With added space comes added size, so remember to make sure your bedroom is large enough for a king size bed.
Best for: Taller sleepers, couples, and large bedrooms
Super king size beds
If you’re a ‘the bigger the better’ kind of sleeper, a super king size bed is the most generous UK bed size, with plenty of stretch-out and starfish space. These beds are the ultimate in roomy relaxation, able to fit not only you and your partner, but the kids and the pets, too.
Best for: Couples, families, and large master bedrooms
What size mattress do I need?
The good news: matching your mattress size is easy. All you need to do is pair it with a bed frame of the same size – kids’ bed to kids’ mattress, single bed to single mattress and so on and so forth.
While width and length are your key measurements here, bear in mind that a tall mattress can impact the look of your chosen bed, even when you match it to the right frame. For example, some people may dislike a mattress peering over a low footboard, so factor that into any measurements.
Will my bed fit in the bedroom?
Is there anything worse than finding the bed of your dreams, only for it to not fit in your room? It’s important to check whether your new sleeping spot will work in your room and that it can get through the door in the first place.
Use our handy checklist when measuring up your bedroom:
1. Check your doors and windows
First things first, before you go ahead and set up your new bed, you need to ensure that the frame won’t prevent you accessing the bedroom.
For example, will you be able to open and close the door both in and outside the bedroom? Will your big bed prevent you from easily accessing the windows? Are all built-in cupboards, drawers and shelves still within reach, without moving furniture? Answer these questions now to save you a headache down the line.
2. Check the dimensions of the bed frame
Naturally, your bed needs to physically fit in the room, so you should measure your space and see if your potential new bed is the right size. Make sure you have enough room to comfortably walk around the bed without having to twist, bend, or crawl over the top! If you’re a visual thinker, it might help to place newspaper down in the shape of your new bed to mark out the space it’ll take.
3. Check the available space in your room
To comfortably move around the bed, ensure you have a clearance space of at least 90cm (or 3ft) from either side of the bed to the closest wall.
You can, of course, push a bed against a wall if the room’s a little snug. However, we’d only recommend doing so if there’s only one person who’ll be sleeping in the bed, to avoid awkward shuffling and rolling for access.
4. Check the headboard height
The headboard’s height is also worth considering; measure from the base of the bed to the top of the headboard to see how far up your wall it will reach. You’ll want to ensure it doesn’t get in the way of anything on the wall, such as hanging pictures, light switches or windows.
5. Check the socket placement
Lastly, while this isn’t essential, it’s helpful to ensure you have easy access to plug sockets while in bed, to keep your phone charged and bedside lamp plugged in.
Check that you can place the bed frame against a wall without covering any plug sockets. Ideally, you’d want to position the bed so there are easy-to-access plug sockets on either side.
Why should I buy a bigger bed and mattress?
Other than simply offering more space to stretch out, there are distinct advantages to upgrading the size of your bed and mattress.
Maybe you’re looking to bump up your growing child’s single bed to a small double? Or perhaps you’re thinking of treating yourself to the sumptuous spread-out space of a luxurious super king size bed?
Here are our top reasons why it might be worth making the switch:
1. Better comfort
The number one reason for upgrading your bed set-up is to uncover even more comfort. A brand-new mattress, one that you’ve hand-picked for its firmness, filling, and even special features, is bound to be a much more comfortable option than an old, worn-out mattress.
An upgrade can also serve as the perfect solution to any insomnia issues, especially if you’re looking for the likes of a memory foam mattress to handle back pain.
2. More sleeping space for couples
Even the closest couples need their own sleeping space from time to time – and a bigger bed helps facilitate that comfortable night’s sleep for both parties.
This is especially true when considering the average person tosses and turns approximately 60 times on average every night! Couples may wish to reduce unwanted disturbances in the night with a pocket sprung mattress, which isolates movement from one side of the bed to the other.
3. Room to grow
As they get older, your little ones will inevitably get too big for their kids’ bed, so you’ll need to provide them with appropriate sleeping spaces. This includes graduating from a bunk bed or child’s bed to a full-sized single bed. Sooner or later, your kids will want their own, bigger bed to match their growing frames!
4. Transform your bedroom
While a bigger bed takes up more square footage, it can also bring more to your bedroom than just a good night’s sleep.
Looking to save some space? Choose a bed with storage, such as lift-up ottoman style beds and divan beds with drawers built into the frame. These types of beds offer an opportunity to remove bulky wardrobes or drawers from your bedroom, or just provide handy extra storage for spare linens and bedding.
For even more bedroom magic, try a bed that’s designed with enticing special features, such as built-in shelves, USB charging, and even TV beds. Perfect for weekend boxset binges!
