A sideboard is a flat-topped piece of furniture, usually with drawers, cupboards, or a mix of the two, used in a dining area for storing crockery and table linens. The flat surface is also often used for serving food or drinks. A sideboard is such a versatile piece of furniture, it can be easily adapted for other areas in the home, so you’ll often see them in living rooms, hallways, home offices, and even bedrooms too.
While a sideboard is usually on the larger side and contains lots of storage, a console table usually has a slimmer profile, with minimal or no storage space - some come with a drawer or two, but most are just a tall, slim table. A console table is therefore better suited to hallways and living rooms, where you need minimal surface space - for example, just a spot to place your keys.
Sideboards are very versatile and you can place them almost anywhere in your home. Buffet sideboards work well in the dining room for extra storage, as well as living room sideboards which can also be found in hallways, home offices, and even bedrooms. However, to keep it looking its best, you’ll want to place your sideboard cabinets somewhere dry with an ambient temperature - we wouldn’t recommend the bathroom or garage for a sideboard.
